Nestled in Elamarru near Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, the Elamarru Community Library is a testament to co-creation, sustainability, and community-driven design, funded by a client committed to centering the lived experiences of its residents.

Built with Porotherm bricks for natural cooling, light shelves on the north and south facades for diffused light, vertical fins with jaali blocks to filter harsh east-west sunlight, and durable limestone flooring, this eco-centric structure is designed to last over 100 years as a dependable community pillar. The exterior features a rustic yet modern facade with a sloped roof, large windows, and an outdoor seating area with greenery, while the interior offers a warm, open layout with stepped benches for community reading, a computer lab for technology access, a lounge for relaxation, and a children’s area, all bathed in natural light and reflecting the children’s vision of a welcoming space.
 

This multi-purpose library inspires and engages all ages, providing a calm environment for learning, competitive exam preparation, and discovery. The design, informed by weather data analysis, ensures comfort in Elamarru’s hot climate, with features like perforated brick screens for ventilation and modular wooden furniture for flexibility. From solo reading corners to spaces for workshops and social gatherings, the library adapts to evolving community needs, fostering connection across generations. With its sustainable materials and thoughtful architecture, the Elamarru Community Library stands as a beacon of innovation, poised to serve as a cultural and educational hub for decades to come.
